Consumer companies rose as strong earnings from Amazon.com and other retailers offset concerns about rising interest rates.
Resilient earnings from consumer staples received a mixed reaction. Shares of Sharpie maker Newell Brands rose after it raised its earnings projection, as it expects a bump from tariff refunds to help offset the rising cost of supplies. Colgate-Palmolive posted sales growth in the second quarter, despite a choppy consumer environment.
AutoNation logged lower revenue after sales of new vehicles declined in the second quarter.
