Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Top-ranked Jannik Sinner withdrew from the 2026 U.S. Open due to a lingering knee injury, the Italian tennis star announced Friday on social media.
Sinner, who lost to Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz (No. 2) in the 2025 finale, was the favorite to win the 2026 title. The five-time Grand Slam singles champion hasn't played since he beat German Alexander Zverev in the July 12 Wimbledon 2026 final.
"Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the U.S. Open this year," Sinner wrote on Instagram and X.
"We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realized that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue.
