Liverpool’s links with Yankuba Minteh are nothing new. But their attempts to sign the winger took another turn as The Athletic revealed that Brighton & Hove Albion rejected a £50million bid for the Gambia international.Minteh injured his right leg in Brighton & Hove’s 3-0 friendly win against Roma this month, keeping the 22-year-old out until at least October.Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola is also a target but Liverpool’s offer points to a side willing to trust Minteh’s talent and potential.Their interest goes back to the summer of 2024, when Minteh was at Newcastle United, who were dealing with profit and sustainability issues. Minteh had spent the previous season on loan at Feyenoord, where he had worked with Arne Slot, who then became Liverpool’s head coach.Plenty has changed since. Andoni Iraola has replaced Slot and Minteh has spent two seasons on the south coast after a £35million ($48m) move in July 2024.What hasn’t changed are his traits and attributes. He is a versatile forward who can cause problems for full-backs on either flank. He may be more at home on the right, cutting onto his left foot, but regardless of which side he plays, his qualities stand out — he is a quick, progressive ball-carrier who gets his team into the opponents’ penalty area.Last season, he ranked fourth for dribbles in the Premier League (142 attempted with a 45.8 per cent success rate), with only Jeremy Doku (179), Iliman Ndiaye (147) and Antonie Semenyo (146) putting up more. Cody Gakpo was the top Liverpool player, but he only attempted 88.Minteh uses his pace to great effect and also holds his width, something that Iraola wants from at least one of his wingers at all times. He works well with an underlapping full-back — sharing the same flank with Jeremie Frimpong would offer significant speed and dynamism to Liverpool’s attack. As is the case with most young players, he is not the finished product. At times, Minteh can be accused of being too one-dimensional. He frequently cuts inside onto his left foot into traffic.
