Brighton & Hove Albion have rejected a £50million ($68.1m) bid from Liverpool for winger Yankuba Minteh. The 22-year-old is currently recovering from surgery on a right leg injury sustained in a 3-0 friendly win at home to Roma earlier this month.Minteh is expected to be out of action for another eight weeks, but sources with knowledge of the matter say he is keen on the potential move if the clubs can agree a fee.The Gambia international, who is under contract until 2029, is one of several wingers Liverpool are tracking. The Athletic has reported that adding to the wide options available to head coach Andoni Iraola has been a priority, following Mohamed Salah’s departure. They have signed Spain international Victor Munoz.
Minteh has contributed nine goals and eight assists in 66 Premier League outings for Brighton since a £30m move from Newcastle in the summer of 2024. Most of those appearances have been on the right, but he has also deputised on the left when Japan international Kaoru Mitoma has been unavailable.Liverpool’s interest in Minteh coincides with Manchester United renewing their interest in signing Brighton’s Cameroonian midfielder Carlos Baleba. The Athletic revealed on Wednesday that the clubs are close to agreeing a deal for Baleba. United have made an offer of around £60million (€70m, $81m) plus £5m in add-ons, which is felt to be below Brighton’s asking price.Minteh’s potential would be a loss for BrightonAnalysis by Brighton correspondent Andy NaylorMinteh would be an attacking loss to Brighton off the back of Danny Welbeck moving to Chelsea. The Gambian and the currently injured Kaoru Mitoma have been the main attacking weapons down the flanks in two seasons under Fabian Hurzeler.Minteh is prone to inconsistency with his end product, but he is rapid with bags of potential for further improvement.Canadian international Promise David has been signed on loan from Union Saint-Gilloise as Welbeck’s replacement, with an obligation to buy.Brighton have other young and natural wingers, including £21.8m summer signing Zadok Johanna from Swedish side AIK, but Minteh has proven Premier League pedigree.Aug 20, 2026Connections: Sports EditionSpot the pattern.
