Lack of proper notifications to affected drivers triggers second largest GDPR fine to date
The Dutch data protection authority has fined Uber €825 million under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) for deactivating driver accounts without properly informing them.
The penalty concerns actions taken by the ride-hailing company between 2020 and 2022, when it temporarily deactivated the accounts of certain Uber drivers it suspected of fraud.
Uber relied upon signals such as trip length to infer drivers were taking unnecessary detours to inflate prices or drivers accepting rides they didn’t intend to take, according to the news agency Reuters which first reported the fine.
The Dutch authority confirmed the GDPR sanction to Euractiv but declined to comment further.
