DRDO’s Naval Science & Technological Laboratory has signed two technology transfer agreements with Bharat Dynamics and Vertex Engineering Systems for submarine countermeasure and LM2500 gas turbine technologies.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO’s) Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL) has signed two Licensing Agreements for Transfer of Technology (LAToT) with a state-owned and a private company, strengthening indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities.The agreement with defence PSU M/s Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL), a premier weapon system integrator and prime production agency for guided missiles and heavy strategic military hardware, is for the production of the ‘Submarine Fired Decoy (SFD) Mohini, ’ which is an underwater countermeasure system launched from a submarine’s decoy launch tubes or torpedo tubes to protect the vessel against incoming acoustic-homing torpedoes.Upon apprehending a threat, a submarine positions SFD Mohini, which was developed over three years starting in 2019, as a cover against vulnerabilities by employing acoustic deception and jamming.Mohini emits sound signals that mimic the acoustic signature, propeller noise and sonar echoes of a real submarine, deceiving incoming passive and active homing torpedoes into targeting the decoy rather than the actual vessel.Similarly, it generates high-intensity broadband acoustic noise to blind the sonar receiver of an incoming torpedo or an enemy surface ship, masking the host submarine’s movement.After successfully engaging the torpedo, the submarine executes evasive manoeuvres and clears the immediate target area safely.LM2500 gas turbine technology transferredThe DRDO lab also transferred technology for the fabrication, installation & commissioning of the ‘LM2500 Gas Turbine’ to M/s Vertex Engineering Systems Private Ltd., Hyderabad, which essentially manufactures high-pressure components from specialised metals such as titanium, nickel-aluminium-bronze, and speciality stainless steels for warship, aircraft carrier, and missile applications.The LM2500 is an industrial and marine gas turbine derived from the TF39 aircraft engine. It is the world’s most widely used marine gas turbine, used extensively as a booster engine in modern warships — including frigates, destroyers, cruisers, and aircraft carriers— operating in combined gas/diesel or combined gas/gas propulsion configurations.Published on August 21, 2026
