US President Donald Trump has announced a temporary easing of restrictions on ground beef imports, allowing up to 300,000 metric tonnes of beef to enter the US without the additional tariff that normally applies outside existing quotas over the next 90 days.
Trump said the move is intended to bring down high beef prices for American consumers while giving the country's cattle herd time to recover.
“As we work to rebuild this herd and help our ranchers, for the next 90 days, the United States will allow up to 300,000 metric tonnes of product for ground beef to be imported with no out of quota tariff,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
He added that the arrangement would reduce prices for American consumers while allowing the US cattle herd to rebuild.
Reuters reported that Trump said he had secured a commitment for the imported meat to be sold at 25% below current market prices, although he did not identify the countries that would supply the beef or the parties behind the commitment.
