Virudhunagar district is in possession of 3,826.7 tonnes of urea, 1,927.4 tonnes of DAP and 269.2 tonnes of muriate of potash, said Virudhunagar Collector, N.O. Sukhaputra.Addressing the monthly farmers’ grievances redressal meeting here on Friday, the Collector said that a total of 8,711 tonnes of various fertilizers, including 2,330 tonnes of mixed fertilizer and 357.4 tonnes of single super phosphate were in stock in the district.Farmers could make use of the fertilizers for the upcoming sowing season, he said.A farmer, Vairamuthu, created flutter at the meeting hall by rolling on the floor in protest against what he claimed inordinate delay in giving patta for his ancestral farm land.He said that he had given at least 40 petitions of the various revenue officials in the last five years but no action had been taken so far.He said that he would hand over the land to the Collector as he could no longer struggle to get the patta.Other farmers pacified him. However, the Collector took objection to the farmer’s behaviour at the meeting.Meanwhile, farmers complained about the Primary Agricultural Cooperative society at Alagapuri near Narikudi failing to return their 80 sovereigns of gold pledged with the bank.Some 115 farmers had pledged their jewels in 2014. However, when they sought its return in 2016, it came to light that the officials had swindled the gold.Over 50 farmers petitioned the Collector seeking to retrieve their valuables. The Collector told them that efforts were on to settle their dues.Mr. Sukhaputra said that the incentive for cane farmers for the year 2024-25 had been disbursed. Similarly, the incentive for the current year would be disbursed upon getting the Government order for the same, he added.Farmers raised the issue of including more tanks for desilting, setting up a mango pulp unit and to desilt the supply channels for storing maximum rain water during the north east monsoon.Srivilliputtur Meghamalai Tiger Reserve, Deputy Director, Ravi, District Revenue Officer, R. Ananthi, Joint Director of Agriculture, Mohandas Sowmiyan, Personal Assistant (Agriculture) to Collector, Amsaveni, Horticulture Deputy Director, Arumugam, were among those who were present.
