A total of 40 farm ponds would be dug up in Virudhunagar district under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund.The farm ponds would be dug at a cost of ₹56 lakh for mitigation of drought impact during 2026-27.In a statement, Virudhunagar Collector, N.O. Sukhaputra, said that Virudhunagar district was impacted by drought due to lower rainfall level. It was also impacting the economy of the district.Run-off rain water could be harvested through rainwater harvesting system or through farm ponds. Such farm ponds could save the standing crops and ensure yield during drought, a statement said.The farm pond has been allocated to Valayapatti and E. Kumaralingapuram in Virudhunagar Block.Other villages that have been allocated farm ponds are Gopalapuram and T. Koppusithampatti in Aruppukottai Block; Pambapatti and Azhagiyanallur in Kariyapatti block; Mayili, Keezhkudi and Vadakkunatham in Tiruchuli block; Nathaikulam, Sottamuri, Anaikulam and Agathapulam in Narikudi block; Keezharajakularaman and Ayan Nachiyarkovil in Srivilliputtur block; Kunnoor and Sundapandiyam in Watrap block; Gopalapuram and Kurichiyarpatti in Rajapalayam block; Vembakottai and Subramaniayapuam in Vembakottai block; Pothireddiyapatti and Pethureddiyapatti in Sattur block; Vellur and Erichanatham in Sivakasi block.Interested farmers can approach the Block Engineers with their land documents and submit their applications.Further details could be obtained from Assistant Executive Engineer (Agricultural Engineering), Virudhunagar over 9786390851 for Virudhunagar, Kariyapatti, Aruppukottai, Tiruchuli and Narikudi blocks.The Assistant Executive Engineer (Agriculctural Engineering), Srivilliputtur, could be contacted over 9080084339 for Srivilliputtur, Rajapalayam, Watrap, Sivakasi, Vembakottai and Sattur blocks, the statement said.
