She may be many things to many people, but one thing’s for sure, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, is a doer. She bounces from one project to another, sometimes dragging a rather reluctant-looking Harry alongside, and she gets things done. Podcasts, lifestyle shows, jams and fashions – you name it, she’s given it a go. Some have worked, others not so well, but you certainly can’t accuse her of being lazy.
Meghan’s profession – and she’s good at it – has always been as an actor. As Rachel Zane in the hit US legal show Suits she attained a level of international fame: even William and Catherine were fans. Harry later joked that he was afraid William might ask Meghan for an autograph when they met.
The late Queen reportedly recognised that Meghan was a successful working woman. According to Gyles Brandreth, author and friend of the royals, the Elizabeth II even suggested to her future granddaughter-in-law that she could continue acting if she wanted “because, after all, it is your profession”. If that’s true, it sits rather strangely with the dictum handed down to Harry and Meghan that they could not have a “half-in and-half out” royal life — one which they now seem to have achieved.
There are reports that Meghan has landed a plum acting role in a UK production. Significantly, this has not been denied by the Sussex camp. The Duchess has already put her toe in the water by returning to acting for the first time in nearly a decade with a cameo as herself in an upcoming comedy called Close Personal Friends. And I think we can assume she enjoyed it. We all get a kick out of doing something we’re good at and, in Meghan’s case, it’s a safe bet that she can command a pretty hefty fee.
