I'm choosing to ignore the doomsayers dismissing reports that Meghan is in talks with Guy Ritchie about a role in his Netflix gangster hit series The Gentlemen. They say it’s just a PR stunt to bolster her acting credentials and up her profile as she returns to Britain. As if the Duchess needs publicity!Yesterday, other entertainment sources, following reports that Meghan’s offer of a role in the series had been ‘withdrawn’, insisted that nothing has changed and that talks remain ongoing.If so, I, for one, am over the moon. Imagine: Meghan back on the small screen after eight years away from the cameras. Yes, she might be a bit rusty. But either way it would make must-watch TV - even more so than her domestic goddess Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, which was not renewed after two series.Meghan’s stilted performance as the perfect hostess was universally mocked by critics and failed to break into Netflix’s top 300 most-watched shows. And yet, it was still gobbled up by 5.3million viewers.Let’s admit it: Whether you’re a Meghan fan or a detractor, if Guy Ritchie offers her even a minuscule role in The Gentlemen, it will have all of us glued to our screens just to see how terrible – or fab – her acting really is. Who knows? Maybe she’s been taking secret acting lessons over in California.The former editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair and keen royal observer Tina Brown, who first broke the news of Meghan’s casting in The Gentlemen, is not convinced. She went as far as to say that the offer was withdrawn ‘after a negative response’.‘The public backlash [against Meghan] was too fierce,' she added.I think that’s rather missing the point. From the moment the Duchess appeared on Oprah and in the Netflix series Harry & Meghan trashing the Royal Family - the six-parter set a record for a documentary debut on the platform with 23.4million views following its launch in December 2022 – many of us have realised that Meghan’s draw is that she is a divisive character. And, like it or not, she is one of the most famous, recognised and photographed women in the world.Nor should we forget her significant acting career - no laughing from the stalls here - when she got engaged to Harry.Before her big break on legal cable TV series Suits, Meghan had single-episode appearances on daytime soap opera General Hospital, the legal drama Century City and crime show CSI:NY as well as minor roles in the movie Remember me (which I can’t for the life of me remember) and the comedy Horrible Bosses (a bit close to the bone now, following allegations of her bullying palace staff, which she denies).And she was undeniably a very glamorous and convincing ‘briefcase model’ on the game show Deal or No Deal.Which is why I think, for all our sakes, we should not just give Meghan a second chance at her acting career but actively encourage it. A minor role in The Gentlemen would be perfect, as Guy Ritchie delights in creating strong, powerful, wilful female characters in his shows – and Meghan, acting or not, is certainly that.I mean, who couldn’t imagine Megs in a role similar to that of Ritchie’s anti-heroine Susie Glass, played by Kaya Scodelario in the second series, the ice-cold head of a massive drugs operation alongside her hapless cohort Duke (ring any bells?) Eddie Horniman. Kaya even looks a bit like Megs.A role in The Gentlemen would make complete sense. Series three is planned to be shot around the Cotswolds, where the Sussexes are believed to be looking for their forever home. Meghan could still do the school run while filming.She may no longer have the screen appeal she once had as the sexy star of Suits, but she is still a global sensation, and - you’ve got to admit - still looks pretty glamorous at 45. And I say good luck to her. In these miserably bleak days, we all need a good belly laugh.As Gloria Swanson playing Norma Desmond, the washed-up star in the 1950s movie Sunset Boulevard said, aged 50 and just five years older than Meghan: ‘I am ready for my closeup.’
