India is all set to introduce stricter enforcement of its SIM card ownership rules from August 24, 2026. The new system will allow telecom operators to digitally check the number of mobile connections that are registered under a person’s identity before issuing a new SIM card. This move is aimed at preventing the misuse of mobile connections for cyber fraud, financial scams and other illegal activities. As per these rules, the maximum limit remains 9 SIM cards for most parts of India, while users in Jammu & Kashmir and the North Eastern region are subject to a lower limit of 6 SIM cards.For most smartphone users, these new rules are unlikely to make much difference.
