Project aims to integrate three key approaches to water treatment into single system
As in so many countries today, Slovakia is facing problems with water pollution.
Industry, heavy use of fertilisers and pesticides in agriculture, and the country’s rich history of mining have all contributed to a slew of high-profile incidents of water pollution in recent years.
One example from just a few years ago is when the River Slaná in the Gemer region turned bright orange. This was linked to previous mining activity nearby.
Then there’s the leaking toxic landfill site in Bratislava’s Vrakuňa region – a legacy of the communist regime. The leak, and the state’s repeated failure to deal with it, have left people living there unable to use water from their wells.
