U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent claimed in an interview with CNBC on Thursday, August 20, that Washington’s upcoming campaign to escalate economic sanctions against Iran aims to bring about the collapse of the Islamic Republic’s government.

Describing the plan as “the largest coordinated economic isolation in world history,” Bessent touted its effectiveness and emphasized Washington’s aggressive strategy. His statement follows a prior announcement on August 14, in which he hinted that the Trump administration was preparing economic isolation measures unprecedented in modern history.

Speaking to CNBC, Bessent argued that escalating economic sanctions could reduce the likelihood of a major U.S. military operation being resumed. He noted that, under current conditions, intensified economic pressure serves as a substitute for direct military strikes, though he cautioned that “this applies to the current situation.”

Bessent stated that he will host a press conference on Monday, August 24, to outline the specific operational details of the plan.

Issuing a stark ultimatum to Washington’s international partners, the Treasury Secretary warned allies that they must decide whether to align with the United States or stand against it. Reaffirming his characterization of the initiative as “the largest coordinated economic isolation in world history,” Bessent told foreign governments: “You are either with us or against us.”
