Matt Cleevely of Cleevely Motors in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire has shared his opinion on which brand of used electric vehicle boasts the best comfort qualities07:59, 21 Aug 2026If comfort is one of your top priorities when choosing your next car, a mechanic has shared what he believes is the best manufacturer to go with – and it's an electric vehicle.‌The likes of Hyundai and Renault are often praised for their EV lineups. And BMW's iX3 previously won a prestigious car of the year. Read our review here to see what it's really like...‌But none of those can stand up to another popular brand in the electric market, according to Matt Cleevely. Matt, the managing director of Gloucestershire-based Cleevely Motors specialises in electric vehicles but also deals with a variety of combustion-engined cars too. It's the former that he would side with given the right budget, however.‌Tasked with a £20,000 budget, he said he'd ignore petrol and diesel vehicles and opt for a used electric car - namely the Tesla Model Y."I would choose a long-range Tesla Model Y, single rear motor, because it is one of the most comfortable and versatile cars on the road," he explained to the Telegraph.Matt continued: "The range is plenty, at around 250-280 miles, plus the Supercharger network is brilliant."‌Auto Express is in agreement, meanwhile, elaborating online: "Tesla has gradually enhanced the comfort of the Model Y as the years have passed."It has a firmer edge at higher speeds (making it one of the more unsettled choices in the class), but there’s greater sophistication than before and it’s only upset by the most severe potholes and undulations."‌The magazine continues: "Body roll is pretty well contained in corners, and grip is relatively strong through a balanced chassis that edges towards understeer when pushed."It’s easy to reach that limit, because the hyper-sensitive steering makes it easy to turn the front axle faster than the chassis can handle. Given that the steering has a gloopy feel and precious little feedback, driving the Model Y with enthusiasm is not very enjoyable."Depending on their mileage, used Model Ys can be snapped up for as little as £18,000 – a fraction of £41,990 retail price of the entry level model.‌As for a non-electric option, fellow mechanics Alex Alfano, owner of north London garage Diagnostic Service & Repairs (DSR) and Robert Hannah, owner of East Kilbride Autocare are in agreement.The pair both highlighted the Audi A6 Avant estate, in 3.0-litre automatic form as a viable choice - regarding the car as high-powered yet economical and comfortable, with plenty of space.Article continues belowElsewhere, Maserati Ghibli is the favoured choice of James Dudley, founder of Automotive Cardiff. He said of the 3.0 V6 (DV6) engine car: "It's comfortable and even though it’s Italian the quality is pretty damn good."Parts can be quite expensive but who cares, you own a Maserati."
