Public Service and Administration Minister Mzamo Buthelezi said on Wednesday the Lifestyle Audit Regulations will not be completed before the local government elections.
The government is pushing ahead with plans to expand lifestyle audits beyond the national and provincial government to include the 257 municipalities across the country.
However, the planned introduction of the lifestyle audits regulations will not be completed by the time new councils are elected in the upcoming local government elections on November 4.
The move comes as the Department of Public Service and Administration, the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) and the South African Local Government Association (Salga) have formalised a task team to align ethics, discipline management, and lifestyle audits across the public service and to develop regulations.
Lifestyle audits are currently not mandatory in the local government sphere amid councillors and senior management officials who are required by legislation to make financial disclosures in line with the Municipal Structures Act.
