Two employees of leading cryptocurrency exchange Binance were detained in the United Arab Emirates in recent weeks, and a third was questioned at a police station in July, the New York Times reported, amid ongoing concerns of the use of the platform by criminals.
The UAE is Binance’s main regulator, and the detentions appear to be an indication of unusual official pressure on the company.
Two of Binance’s employees were stopped at Emirates airports, one of whom was a mid-level staff member who was travelling through the city of Sharjah this month when he was stopped, taken to a police station, and held overnight, the report said, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter.
