Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa has committed to take action whenever allegations of corruption and maladministration in municipalities have been brought to his attention.
Hlabisa confirmed that he has referred five municipalities for investigation to MECs in their provinces after he became aware of allegations of corruption and maladministration to date.
Responding to DA MP Marina van Zyl during the question-and-answer session in the National Assembly on Wednesday, Hlabisa stated that he referred maladministration allegations in Mossel Bay Municipality in the Western Cape, procurement irregularities in Steve Tshwete Municipality in Mpumalanga and corruption allegations in Moqhaka Municipality, Matjhabeng Municipality and Fezile Dabi District Municipality in the Free State in the last year.
“All these matters are presently at various stages of investigation, beyond these referrals, Cogta continues to strengthen consequence management by implementing Section 57A of the Municipal Systems Act, which prevents officials dismissed for misconduct or who resign before disciplinary proceedings are concluded to simply resurface in another municipality,” he said.
