The following Q&A has been edited for length and clarity.
How has the relationship between data and marketing evolved over your career?
When I started my career in the U.K., there were just two commercial television channels, a handful of newspapers and a few magazines. Marketing then was largely about reaching broad audiences because that was all you could really do. Today, consumers interact with brands across countless digital and analog touchpoints, generating a wealth of signals that create far more opportunities to understand not just where people are, but who they are and what matters to them. The real advantage comes from connecting those signals in ways that help marketers understand people completely and predict better ways to surprise and delight them with meaningful messages, and context that adds to the impact and value of the message.
What does alignment between data, creative output and marketing strategy require?
Too often, strategy, creative and media teams are working from different versions of the truth. When everyone begins with the same understanding of current and prospective customers, it becomes much easier to identify new opportunities and create messaging that genuinely resonates. That shared understanding creates alignment across strategy, creative, media and measurement, enabling better decisions at every stage of the customer journey and a more consistent experience overall.
