Protest against proposed closure of tribal school at Marikavalasa

The Adivasi Girijana Sangham and the Parents’ Committee of the Andhra Pradesh Tribal Welfare Residential School for Boys at Marikavalasa have opposed the government’s decision to discontinue the school and establish a Centre of Excellence on its premises.The organisations staged a rally from Jagadamba Centre to the Visakhapatnam Collectorate and held a protest there on Thursday.Association national executive member P. Appala Narasa said they were not opposed to the proposed Centre of Excellence, but wanted the government to provide an alternative building without closing the existing school.The school, established in 2004 to provide English-medium education to tribal students, currently has about 500 students, the organisers said. They said that about 275 students of Classes V to VII would be transferred to schools in the agency-area and urged the government to allow the students to continue at Marikavalasa.
