Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao on Thursday demanded the cancellation of the proposed Google data centre project in Visakhapatnam, saying the government should respect public opinion and address drinking water needs first.Mr. Rao, along with other party leaders, inspected the Mudasarlova reservoir and the proposed data centre site. He alleged that the project would increase pressure on the city’s water resources and questioned the government’s decision to supply Godavari water to the data centre while drinking water needs in surrounding areas remained unaddressed.He also questioned the allocation of 160 acres of Simhachalam Devasthanam land for the project and asked the BJP, RSS, and VHP why they had not raised the issue of protecting temple land.Mr. Rao alleged that the government did not have expert or project reports on the data centre and criticised differing estimates of its water requirement.
