A police task team has arrested a co-ordinator in the theft and illicit trade of minerals in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal.
A twelfth suspect wanted in connection with the theft of minerals valued at R26 million in KwaZulu-Natal is behind bars.
Sakhile Cyril Mbuyazi, 44, was arrested on Tuesday after the SAPS National Organised Task Team secured a warrant for his arrest. Police alleged that Mbuyazi acted as a co-ordinator in the theft and illicit trade of minerals in and around Richards Bay.
Mbuyazi appeared before the Empangeni Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, facing a charge of theft of minerals. His case was postponed to August 28 for a formal bail application.
The police believe Mbuyazi could be a key figure in the criminal syndicate under investigation. Mbuyazi allegedly paid individuals involved in the theft of the minerals, and his arrest brings the total number of suspects arrested and charged in connection with this investigation to 12.
