The suspected crimes are dated to the years 2014–2021 and 2014–2024.There are two victims in the case, who were minors for part of the periods in question, but they are now adults.The suspect in the case, a woman understood to be in her 40s who holds both Finnish and Russian citizenship, has denied committing any crimes.Finnish authorities believe the woman travelled to Syria with her children in 2014. The family later ended up living in the al-Hol displacement camp in the northeast of the country.According to Finland's National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the woman returned to Finland with one child at the end of 2021. The woman's other child returned to Finland at a later date.The NBI wrapped up its preliminary investigation into the case last year.Maximum prison term of 10 yearsIf convicted of aggravated human trafficking, the woman could face a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison.Under Finnish law, a person is deemed to have committed an act of human trafficking if they recruit, hand over, transport, receive, or accommodate another person for the purpose of exploitation.The act is considered aggravated if, for example, violence is used and the victim suffers serious bodily injury, or if the crime involves a child under eighteen years of age.Finnish officials tried for several years to repatriate Finnish children from the camp, but declared in 2023 that it was not possible to bring the last 10 or so due to a lack of cooperation from their mothers. By then, 26 Finnish children and nine adults had been voluntarily repatriated from the camp.The al-Hol detention camp was created after the ISIS territorial caliphate ended in March 2019 following the Battle of Baghouz. Operations at the camp itself effectively ended at the beginning of this year after a chaotic handover and the departure of over 20,000 detainees.
