Mary.J. Blige on not having children The "Without You" hit maker Mary J. Blige reveals why she passed on recording "Umbrella" before it became Rihanna's career-defining hit. She explained that the song's style and lyrics simply weren't aligned with her artistic identity.

Mary J. Blige has opened up about her decision not to have children, reflecting on the choice she made earlier in life and acknowledging that her perspective has evolved with age.

The Grammy-winning singer discussed motherhood during a recent appearance on Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson’s IMO podcast, where she reflected on the reasons she ultimately chose not to become a parent.

Blige explained that her decision was influenced in part by watching relatives navigate the demands of caring for children. Seeing family members constantly having to arrange babysitters and adjust their lives around childcare made her realise how much freedom could be affected by parenthood.

The singer had previously spoken publicly about the same decision in 2022, when she said she enjoyed having the freedom to travel, move around and make decisions without having to constantly care for someone else.
