Lebanon handed over Maj Gen Adel Issa to Syria, marking the first such extradition of a top military official since the Assad regime's collapse.
Mr Issa, 67, was arrested in Beirut after visiting the Syrian embassy to resolve paperwork, when staff recognised him and alerted Lebanese authorities.
He faces serious charges including intentional homicide, torture leading to death, and crimes aimed at inciting sectarian strife.
The extradition was authorised under a Lebanese-Syrian judicial agreement dating back to 1951.
