Harry and Meghan’s return to Britain may well be a family decision, but to America and beyond, it also looks like something else entirely: a reset.

Six years ago, the States offered the Duke and Duchess of Sussex everything they wanted. Freedom from royal life, huge media deals and a chance to build a global brand on their own terms. They arrived with curiosity, sympathy and a commercial value few celebrities could match.

For a while, the money followed. Netflix was reported to have committed around £60 million. Spotify’s deal with Archewell Audio was said to be worth about £15 million. Harry’s memoir became a publishing phenomenon. The Oprah interview was watched globally.
