The Pawnee Heights High School community in Kansas is mourning the loss of one of its football players following a medical emergency at practice Tuesday.Principal Tina Vondracek confirmed the student's death in an email to KAKE, saying the district's immediate priority is supporting students, staff and the surrounding community.“We extend our most heartfelt sympathies to all those who are hurting and are focused on providing support and care to our school district community,” Vondracek said. “This week, we are focused on caring for our students, staff and community.”According to KAKE, the student-athlete, whose name was not released in the report, collapsed during practice Tuesday evening. He said law enforcement did not plan to observe the procedure because there were multiple witnesses to the medical emergency and authorities had no suspicion of foul play.Pawnee Heights Was Preparing for 2026 Football SeasonThe tragedy occurred on the first day of classes for USD 496 and less than two weeks before Pawnee Heights was scheduled to begin its football season.The Tigers compete in Kansas six-player football and are scheduled to open Sept. 1 against Spearville.
