The development of the Northern Sea Route (NSR), Russia’s strategic trading artery through Arctic waters, reached another milestone this month when China started regular container navigation with Europe via the route. The move is another sign that the NSR could someday become a new global transportation corridor at a time when traditional routes are being disrupted. Russia itself is ramping up crude oil and LNG shipments via the NSR, although it faces numerous challenges.
