The Senate Committee on Sports on Wednesday summoned the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over the declining fortunes of Nigeria’s national football teams.

The emergency meeting, which brought together NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, was convened amid growing concerns over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for major international competitions.

Nigeria’s failure to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil were among the issues that prompted the Senate’s intervention.

The meeting, presided over by Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central), the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, was held in his office.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Ningi said the session was convened at the instance of Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, who had expressed concern over the state of Nigerian sports, particularly football.
