PLDT tests cell-to-sat tech against disaster

MANILA, Philippines — PLDT Inc.’s wireless arm Smart Communications Inc. has completed another round of tests for its direct-to-device satellite technology, this time simulating disaster scenarios in Batangas where traditional mobile networks may become unavailable.

In a statement, PLDT said the latest trials showed the technology, being tested in partnership with US-based Lynk Global, could allow standard mobile phones to receive emergency alerts and public safety messages even when beyond the reach of terrestrial cell sites.

Direct-to-device technology uses low-earth orbit satellites to connect directly with mobile phones, potentially extending basic connectivity to so-called “dead zones,” or areas beyond the reach of conventional network infrastructure.FEATURED STORIES
