COTABATO CITY, BARMM, Philippines — Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) interim Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua survived an ambush on Saturday afternoon in Datu Odin Sinsuat town, Maguindanao del Norte, hours after being chosen to head a new regional party vying for parliament seats in the Sept. 14 elections.

Macacua’s convoy was en route to this city from Kabuntalan, Maguindanao del Norte, when attacked by still unidentified gunmen at Barangay Bitu.

The three vehicles making up the convoy got hit but the top BARMM official was unharmed, one of his aides told the Inquirer.

Conflict monitors earlier warned of heightening tensions as the election is a major driver of violence in the region.
