KORONADAL CITY, SOUTH COTABATO, Philippines — Hog raisers in South Cotabato province deplored the cheap buying of live pigs with farmgate prices falling by at least 20 percent in the past few months, to an average of P115 per kilogram (kg), far below the cost of raising them.

Elma Ollola, owner of Sophia’s Farm and an officer of the Highland Agripreneurs Integrated Farmers Association in Tboli town, said current farmgate buying prices of live hogs ranged between P110 to P120 per kg and “occasionally dropping to P105.”

The price has been low since last year, she said, falling from P140-P160 per kg in January to around P110-P120 per kg since March.

Ollola said it costs about P13,000 to raise an 80-kilogram market-ready hog, including the piglet, feeds, medicines, vaccines, labor and other expenses, or a production cost of P162 per kg, way below the P110-P120 per kg current buying price.
