Rayo Vallecano had roughly 48 minutes to feel good about themselves. Then Jon Guridi stepped up to the penalty spot and made sure the celebrations were short-lived.

The 31-year-old midfielder buried a spot-kick in the 52nd minute at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán to level the score at 1-1, canceling out Álvaro García’s early strike for Rayo and earning Sevilla a share of the spoils in their 2026-27 La Liga season opener on August 15.

A cold start, then a colder finish

Rayo Vallecano came out swinging. Álvaro García put the visitors ahead in just the fourth minute, the kind of gut-punch opening that makes a home crowd go very quiet, very fast.

But seven minutes into the second half, the hosts were awarded a penalty. Guridi, one of Sevilla’s summer arrivals, took responsibility. He made no mistake from the spot, slotting the ball home to make it 1-1.
