The 80th Independence Day was celebrated with patriotic fervour and gaiety at the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Saturday. A large number of people gathered on the High Court premises to witness the celebrations.The event began with the Administrative Judge of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court Justice C.V. Karthikeyan garlanding the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in front of the court building. High Court judges offered floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.The State song Tamil Thai Vazhthu and the national song Vande Mataram were sung. Justice Karthikeyan hoisted the national flag and the national anthem was played by the police band.Justice Karthikeyan inspected the guard of honour and took the salute at a parade presented by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). Families of martyred soldiers who laid down their lives protecting the country were honoured at the event.The audience were left captivated by the combat techniques demonstrated by the CISF jawans and the ‘silambam,’ a traditional martial art form performed by school children.A blood donation camp was held as part of the Independence Day celebrations followed by cultural programmes. The participants of the cultural programmes were presented with mementos. High Court Judges, Registrars, advocates and court staff attended the event.At the Madurai District court campus, Principal District Judge M. Sai Saravanan hoisted the national flag.
