Jayden Daniels sending a cease-and-desist letter to LSU raises the prospect of a legal battle that could attract attention from other former college stars, should they seek leverage with their alma maters.
As ESPN reported, Daniels’ attorney on Aug. 5 demanded that LSU stop using Daniels’ NIL, or else face the possibility of being sued. Daniels played at LSU from 2022-2023 and won the Heisman Trophy in 2023, months before the Washington Commanders selected him with the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.
Daniels is upset that LSU sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett is going to wear the No. 5 jersey, which Daniels wore at LSU from 2022 to 2023.
There are two key legal issues in the conflict between the star quarterback and his alma mater: whether he has the right to control who may wear LSU’s No. 5 jersey, and whether he could sue LSU for continuing to use his NIL.
