Around 19 million eggs have been recalled in the United States over possible Salmonella contamination, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has said.

Midwest Poultry Services (MPS) voluntarily recalled 1,589,577 dozen eggs on July 22 after detecting potential Salmonella Enteritidis contamination at two Texas farms, the FDA said.

MPS Egg Farms said on its website that it had proactively recalled the eggs as a precautionary measure and initiated testing protocols to identify potential sources of Salmonella.

On Wednesday, the FDA said it was a Class 1 recall, indicating a reasonable probability of serious illness or death.
