Canada slapped sanctions on five Iranian officials connected to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on August 14, accusing them of obstructing navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The move targets individuals across Iran’s military, legislative, and shipping sectors who Ottawa says have played direct roles in threatening the narrow waterway that handles a staggering share of global energy transit.
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand framed the action in stark terms.
“Freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is essential to global trade and energy security.”
The sanctions, issued under Canada’s Special Economic Measures (Iran) Regulations, freeze any Canadian-held assets belonging to the five individuals and prohibit Canadian citizens and businesses from dealing with them.
