Poultry Farmers Regulatory Committee, the apex body of poultry producers in Tamil Nadu and a unit of Broiler Co-ordination Committee (BCC), has submitted to the State Government a demand seeking power tariff concessions to poultry farms, as in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, to infuse viability into what is perceived to be a struggling industry.The BCC has conveyed to the Animal Husbandry Department the imperative need for subsidy schemes to stem the decline.According to BCC sources, subsidy is an absolute necessity for establishing new sheds. The cost of establishing a new shed works out to ₹330 per sq ft. For raising 10,000 birds, poultry farmers are required to invest up to ₹20 lakh.A subsidy scheme will draw participation of young entrepreneurs and enterprising women in rural parts to revive the poultry industry, considering it an agriculture-allied sector, the BCC has pointed out.The BCC has urged the Animal Husbandry Department to make adequate Budgetary provisions for modernisation and expansion of existing poultry units as well.Another demand put forth by the BCC pertains to establishment of animal feed industry by creating the ecosystem for diversion of poultry wastes.
