The taxman has arrived at the Maumela family home, and he is not asking for a cup of tea. He has arrived with a R39.9 million bill.
The recipient is Mboneni Benedicta Maumela, mother of businessman Morgan Maumela and a former high-ranking official in the Limpopo Department of Health. SARS has issued her with additional tax assessments covering the 2017 to 2023 tax years, along with penalties and interest. More troublingly, SARS says it has found prima facie evidence of fraud.
Mboneni Maumela is challenging the assessment.
And so begins another chapter in a story that has already taken South Africa through hospitals, government tenders, luxury properties, exotic cars and extraordinary wealth.
