Facebook parent Meta said it has removed more than 750,000 Instagram and Facebook accounts in Australia suspected of belonging to users under 16 since it began complying with the country’s ban late last year.
The figure includes more than 500,000 accounts Meta removed shortly before the law came into effect in December, and includes 462,000 Instagram and 294,000 Facebook accounts.
Australian authorities say social media platforms aren’t doing enough to comply with the law, with the online safety regulator eSafety finding 81.5 percent of under-16s reported using social media as of March, down only slightly from 85.9 percent before the ban took effect.
