Dead fish found on beaches? Here’s what you should and shouldn't do

While the recent mass die-off of fish along the Western Cape coast has appeared to run its course, the question of what one should do when they see a dead fish remains — and no, you cannot take it home to make dinner.

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) issued a stern warning for members of the public. "As a precaution, while testing continues, members of the public should not collect or consume dead fish found on beaches."

So what should one do?

Residents are advised to report the incident if possible. Note the exact location, date, and approximate number of fish, then report it to local authorities or environmental management. You may contact the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) or your local municipal/coastal management office.
