Shares of industrial and transportation companies rose after surprisingly soft wholesale inflation data.

The producer price index was flat in July from June levels.

In a good sign for global economic activity, two major shipping lines posted solid earnings. A.P. Moller-Maersk shares rose after the Danish freight line raised its full-year growth projections for the second time in recent months, citing higher freight rates and strong demand in Asia. Similarly, shares of German shipping line Hapag Lloyd rose after strong demand offset the impact of disruptions in Middle East shipping lanes.

Chinese-owned automaker Polestar "orchestrated" its recent ban by the U.S. government as "cover" for its desire to leave the U.S. market, one of its largest American dealers alleged in a lawsuit filed this week.
