Twitch's chief product officer acknowledged no one would volunteer their content if given the choice

Twitch enrolled all of its streamers in a program that lets parent company Amazon $AMZN use their channel content to train generative AI models, with creators automatically opted in unless they take steps to disable the setting.

During a livestream on the official Twitch channel Wednesday, chief product officer Mike Minton faced questions about the opt-out design head-on, giving a blunt rationale: "If this was opt-in, nobody would opt in. That's honestly the answer," he said.

Content eligible for collection includes streams, clips, images, and chat logs, Minton said. Amazon will not resell the data to other companies, he added. Minton gave a concrete example of how the data might be used: a creator's audio could help refine speech-to-text models, which would in turn improve automatic subtitles on Twitch and Amazon video. Minton said he did not know whether Amazon had already used any Twitch content for model training.
