As part of the celebrations marking its 50th year, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has bolstered its coastal security and fisherman safety in Andhra Pradesh, by conducting nearly 1,000 Community Interaction Programmes (CIPs) across the State throughout 2025–26.The initiative engaged more than 25,000 fishermen, strengthening the synergy between maritime security agencies and the coastal community, according to a statement on Thursday.Conducted in close coordination with the Andhra Pradesh State Fisheries Department, Marine Police, and district administration, the programme aims to heighten awareness regarding maritime safety, search and rescue procedures, and sustainable fishing practices.“Spanning the entire 1,050-km coastline, the campaign educates fishermen on critical safety measures, including the mandatory use of life jackets, communication equipment, and emergency distress devices”, the release said. The focal point of these interactions is the promotion of the ICG’s toll-free emergency number 1554, ensuring rapid response during distress at sea. Furthermore, fishermen have been sensitised to the ecological and economic importance of the annual fishing ban, highlighting its role in protecting breeding grounds and securing future livelihoods.“The enthusiastic participation of the fishing community has been instrumental in enhancing information sharing and bolstering our coastal surveillance efforts,” a senior ICG official noted. These programmes also included demonstrations on first aid, cyclone preparedness, and safe navigation, fostering a more resilient and security-aware coastal ecosystem.Looking ahead, the ICG plans to further expand its engagement across all coastal districts. Future initiatives will place greater emphasis on digital weather awareness and youth engagement in fishing villages. The Coast Guard aims to transform every fisherman into an informed partner in safeguarding lives and securing the nation’s maritime frontiers, steadfastly upholding its motto, Vayam Rakshamah (We Protect), the release added.
