Chime Financial, one of the largest neobanks in the US with tens of millions of customers, is exploring how stablecoins could fit into its consumer banking platform. The company joined the Open Standard consortium backing Open USD, a proposed dollar-backed stablecoin designed for payments and global money movement, alongside heavy hitters like Visa, Mastercard, and Coinbase.

That said, Chime wants to be very clear about one thing: it does not currently offer stablecoins or any crypto assets to its users. The company has even gone so far as to tell customers to disregard third-party announcements about stablecoin initiatives.

What Open USD actually is

Open Standard unveiled Open USD on June 30, 2026, positioning it as a neutral infrastructure layer for payments and financial transactions. The consortium backing the project includes over 140 partners, making it one of the broadest industry coalitions assembled around a single stablecoin effort.

The stablecoin is designed to be dollar-backed, targeting payments and money movement rather than speculative crypto trading. A launch is planned for later in 2026, though specific timelines haven’t been nailed down publicly.
