The likelihood for expansion of Tiruppur Corporation for expanding its jurisdictional limits by the proposed inclusion of 19 local bodies in the surroundings, before the conduct of elections for local bodies next year is bleak, in view of the apparent stagnation in the procedure. The process involves issuance of primary notification, adoption of resolutions by the local bodies accepting the merger, conduct of public hearings, and finally the issuance of the final notification by the Department of Municipal Administration and Water Supply.During April, 2025, primary notification was issued for annexation of Nachipalayam and Kanniampoondi villages that had adopted resolutions for merger with the Tiruppur Corporation. However, since public hearings have not been held so far by the district administration, the final notification has not been issued.Official sources confirmed that there is no visible forward movement on inclusion of 17 other local bodies: Perumanallur, Pazhankarai, Pongupalayam, Kanakkampalayam,, Kalipalayam, Agrahara Periyapalayam, Sarkar Periyapalayam, Mudhalipalayam, Perunthozhuvu, Ganapathipalayam, Karaipudur, Arulpuram, Arumuthampalayam, 63 Velampalayam, Iduvai, and Mangalam.By and large, the general public in these villages are opposed to the merger with Tiruppur Corporation, fearing steep rise in property taxes even without any developments on the infrastructure front. They cite the instance of stagnancy in development in several areas including Veerapandi and Muthampalayam that were included in the city limits during 2010, along with eight other local authority areas: 15 Velampalayam Third Grade Municipality, Chettipalayam Village Panchayat, Mannarai Village Panchayat, Thottipalayam Village Panchayat, Andipalayam Village Panchayat, Murugampalayam Village Panchayat, and Neruperichal Village Panchayat.Based on estimated population in 2021, Tiruppur Corporation was listed in Category A along with Coimbatore and Madurai Corporations.According to officials, the population in Tiruppur Corporation which was 8,77,778 as per 2011 census in the industrial city, has now crossed 13 lakh, factoring in the presence of lakhs of migrant labourers.
