Tiruchi Corporation has revived its long-pending plan to expand its main office on Bharathidasan Salai, with a revised project estimate of ₹75 crore.A fresh Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared to facilitate the construction of additional office buildings within the existing premises. The proposal to expand the Corporation’s main office was initially mooted in 2022 to cater to future needs. In July 2023, following the expansion of the city limits, the civic body proposed demolishing the existing canteen building behind the main complex and constructing a new office building at an estimated cost of ₹41.37 crore.Although the Corporation submitted a DPR to the State government seeking administrative approval and release of funds, the project was kept pending. In view of the delay and changing requirements, the civic body has now revised the project estimate to ₹75 crore, with the amount earmarked under the Corporation’s General Funds 2026–27.According to officials, the revised DPR is in the final stages of preparation and will be submitted to the State government shortly. Once approval is obtained, the Corporation will invite tenders for the construction of the new building. The proposed expansion includes separate office chambers for the five zonal heads and standing committee chairpersons, along with a new council hall for accommodating more than 100 councillors. The additional infrastructure is expected to address the growing administrative needs of the civic body.At present, the main building of the Corporation is functioning on 4.8 acres of land in the city. The existing complex houses a council meeting hall and chambers of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Commissioner, besides rooms for various departments, including Engineering, Town Planning, Health, and Revenue, among others.Meanwhile, with the merger of 22 village panchayats in the peripheral areas of the city limits within the jurisdiction of the Corporation, it is said that more office space would be required and that the civic body was expected to expand the number of wards from 65 to 100.
