The Tamil Nadu Government has established a working women’s hostel at a cost of ₹39.89 crore at Gangaikondan Industrial Growth Centre for benefiting the outsiders working with the manufacturing units of this industrial estate.After Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay inaugurated the working women’s hostel with 870 beds through videoconference on Thursday, District Collector Anand Mohan lighted the traditional lamp in the presence of District Revenue Officer, Gangaikondan SIPCOT Industrial Growth Centre, M. Suganya.The three-storey building with 1.24 lakh square feet has been built on 2.07 acres of land inside the Gangaikondan SIPCOT Industrial Growth Centre. A total of 138 rooms -131 rooms each with six beds (786 beds) and seven rooms each with 12 beds (84 beds) - have been created.Separate beds, wardrobes, tables, chairs, etc. have been provided for each hosteller. A dining hall with 228 seats, workers’ room, reception, store room, laundry, drying area, visitors’ room and clinic have also been created in this hostel.Water purifiers have been fitted at various spots on the hostel premises. Besides deploying security personnel round-the-clock, CCTV cameras have been fitted at vantage points. Wi-Fi facility has been created on all the floors of the hostel. Two-wheeler and four-wheeler parking areas have been established.Apart from the recreation room, a well-equipped play area has also been created to keep the hostellers engaged after their working hours.Since the Gangaikondan SIPCOT Industrial Growth Centre is now overflowing with manufacturing units, the women workforce’s size, especially after the inauguration of TP Solar and the arrival of Vikram Solar, in this vibrant complex has increased manifold. Hence, the women workers, who have been working in shifts, have rented houses in the nearby areas like Gangaikondan, Kayathar, Thazhaiyoothu and Shankar Nagar or in Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai.Hence, the working women’s hostel inaugurated at the Gangaikondan SIPCOT complex would be a boon for the women from other districts, the officials said.
