The UK economy posted a surprise 0.3% expansion in June, snapping out of a flat May and a dip in April. The Office for National Statistics released the figures on August 13, crediting an unlikely duo for the turnaround: the FIFA World Cup and unusually warm weather.
For the second quarter as a whole, GDP grew 0.4%, a step down from the 0.6% recorded in Q1 2026. The services sector did most of the heavy lifting, expanding 0.4% over the quarter.
Football, beer, and sunshine: the economic trifecta
The sectors that benefited most from the June bounce read like a receipt from a World Cup viewing party. Wholesale trade, food and beverage services, publishing, television production, and advertising all saw notable gains.
ONS Director of Economic Statistics Liz McKeown acknowledged that while growth had slowed compared to the first quarter, it remained “relatively robust.”
