In an influencer-obsessed world, star power is becoming a formidable force in politics so the addition of Duduzane Zuma to the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party's leadership should come as no surprise.
Last week, MK Party president Jacob Zuma announced that his son Duduzane would be the party's first deputy president, a move that analysts say will likely boost youth engagement during the party's campaigning for the November 4 local government elections.
Duduzane, who has dabbled in politics, announced in 2024 that he was starting his own party but it failed to gain ground. However, he has a strong social media presence and can pull crowds when he speaks at universities, especially in KwaZulu-Natal.
Experts caution though celebrity appeal alone does not equate to governance capacity.
